1. The Gist
Hello! I'm Nina, the person behind KnowStatistics. My goal is to make statistics clear and approachable, and that philosophy extends to your privacy. I believe in being transparent about data, not just in charts, but in how this website operates.
This document explains what little information this site collects and why. Consider it the .05 alpha level of our relationship, the baseline for trust.
2. The Information I Collect (And Why)
Just like a well-designed study, I only collect data that's necessary.
Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
The only way I get personal information like your name or email is if you give it to me directly. This happens if you use the contact form or leave a comment. I use this information solely to reply to you. I will never sell it or add you to a list without your explicit permission.
Log and Usage Data
When you visit, my web server automatically logs some anonymous data. This includes your IP address, browser type, and which pages you visited. Think of it as counting the number of people who walk into a library: it helps me see what's popular, but I don't know who you are.
3. The Deal with Cookies & Advertising
To keep the lights on and the content free, I use third-party advertising from Ezoic. This is where things get a bit more complex.
What's a cookie? Think of it as a small sticky note your browser holds onto. It helps websites remember things, like your preferences or that you've visited before.
Third-Party Cookies: Ezoic and its partners use cookies to show you ads that are hopefully more relevant and less random. These cookies track your visits here and on other sites to build an anonymous interest profile. This is why you might see an ad for hiking boots after visiting a hiking blog.
I don't have access to the specific information these cookies collect, but you have control. You can manage cookies in your browser settings and will be prompted by a consent banner when you visit.
4. The Third Parties I Work With
I don't operate in a vacuum. Besides my web host, these are the key third-party services I use:
- Cusdis: Powers the comment section on the site. When you leave a comment, it processes the content of your comment as well as the name and email you provide. You can view the Cusdis Privacy Policy here.
- FormSubmit: My contact form is powered by them to prevent spam. When you send a message, it passes through their service.
- Google Analytics (Potentially): I may use Google Analytics to understand my site traffic. It helps me answer questions like "Do people actually read the long posts?" It collects anonymous data. You can read the Google Privacy Policy for more info.
5. Your Rights Over Your Data
Your data is yours. Depending on where you live (hello GDPR and CCPA!), you have rights. These include the right to see, amend, or request the deletion of any personal information I hold about you (which, as mentioned, is likely just your info from a contact form submission).
6. Contact Me
If you have any questions, or want to discuss the probability of this policy being the most exciting thing you've read all day, you can reach me at: outlier@knowstatistics.com.
